The Stellarton Fire Department has been serving the Town of Stellarton since it was first formed in 1889, the same year Stellarton itself was incorporated.

Back in those days, the Department operated out of the back of the Town Hall Building.  The first Chief of the Department was James R. Corbett, who served from 1889 until 1893.

Some of the early horse-drawn equipment used back then is still in existence.  One piece, a reel wagon, is in our present facility and dates back to 1894.  Another piece is on display outside of the former Library Building on Leo Fahey Way, above the Albion Baseball Field.

In the days when the Albion Mine was in operation along North Foord Street, where the Sobeys and Empire Buildings now stand, crews of men who lived in the Lourdes area were assigned as chemical, reel, and hook and ladder crews, in the event that a fire broke out at the Albion Mine operation.

Our current Fire Hall is located at 8 Jubilee Fire StationAvenue and was officially opened on October 6, 1979, with the cornerstone being laid by the Honourable Elmer MacKay, MP for Central Nova.  It is located across from the original department’s location.  In the basement area of our Fire Hall is the Oak Room Lounge.  On the apparatus or main floor, are our 2 pumper trucks, our equipment truck and our 4 x 4 Suburban.  Our pumpers are an 840 and a 1050, which means they can pump 840 gallons per minute and 1050 respectively.  The 840 carries 500 gallons and the 1050 carries 800 gallons of water each.  The equipment truck carries bunker gear (turn-out gear) for each firefighter as well as SCBA (breathing apparatus or B A), masks, spare oxygen Fire Truckbottles, as well as some medical equipment and a thermal imaging unit.  Our Suburban can be used for carrying additional personnel and equipment and is mainly used for responses for mutual aid calls to assist other Departments in the County.

The pride of the Department is the once fully restored 1938 pumper which is now being housed in the former Sears Building on Acadia Avenue.  It was used in various parades throughout the county for several years, and was the highlight for both young and old alike.

Our present compliment of Firefighters consists of 34 Volunteers, including our Chief Dwight Campbell, Deputy Chief Mike O'Sullivan, Captains Ed Stewart and Alex MacDonald and Lieutenant  Jarret Campbell.

Practice sessions are held weekly on Thursday nights to keep abreast with new techniques and to keep on top of our skills in the event of a fire.
